The Seahawks' own version of "Mr. Clutch" has officially left the building.

Josh Brown

Josh Brown signed a five-year agreement with the Rams yesterday, reportedly totaling $14.2 million, including a $4 million signing bonus. That's the most for a kicker in the NFL. Ever.

And as we know in Seattle, Brown is worth every penny.

*sniff*

The Rams are bastards for doing this, especially since they're a division rival on the mend after an atrocious '07 season. The teams that suffer that badly in one season typically get pretty pissed off and furiously rebuild in the following off-season, which takes a lot of resources and crafty manuevers by the owners, coaching staff and GM.

Even though the mass exodus seems to have stopped (at least for now), the Seahawks are still left with a mild quandary at a few positions. And, yes, that includes wide receiver, if only because of the large amount of untested blood we’re going to be throwing on the battlefield come September.

There’s Ben Obumanu, who had glimpses of clutch brilliance in limited situations last year. He stepped in to fill in for a few of our starters, and I know I’m not alone in saying it looked like he had the ability to start all 16 games without a hitch next season. Courtney Taylor, who barely got any playing time this season, looks quick, runs deep and has great hands. Logan Payne, who was signed off the practice squad in the eleventh hour before the playoffs, has yet to step on the field and catch a Hasselbeck dart, but Holmgren has been touting his talent like he’s an unheralded savant. Maybe losing Hackett isn’t such a bad thing after all? Hell, the guy left a solid team making a run for the Super Bowl in a legendary coach’s swansong season to be a #2 with an injury-prone QB, when he could’ve easily stayed here and been a #1.

Lofa

More good news for Hawk fans today -

Lofa Tatupu just signed a 6-year extension on his contract worth approximately $40 million total and $16 million in guarantees.

Another excellent move on Ruskell's part in keeping the locker room leaders at the core of the team. Lofa is a huge contributor on the field and part of what makes the Seattle defense the juggernaut that it is.

I guess three trips to the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl appearance amount to something after all, eh?

I must say I'm rather confused when I read the surprising amount of anti-Ruskell sentiment that seems to be popular opinion from many 'hawk fans this offseason.

It’s easier to notice all this in the offseason, of course, when there aren’t any games happening to distract the masses from the red tape and the politics of the sport. Personally, I just think a lot of the bitching has to do with the fact that we’re all suffering from Acute Football Withdrawal Syndrome right now. Hell, it’s March, and all the fuss is about baseball season, which is currently five minutes away from officially beginning in our fair city of Seattle as I’m typing this.

If anyone who’s been paying attention to what’s been going on with the Seahawks in the offseason still says Ruskell is a bad GM, I’m going to be bold and casually come up behind you with a copy of the PI’s Seahawks issue from last September and generously swat you upside the head with it. Trust me, we’ll both feel better afterwards.
